Macomb students, faculty and staff volunteer for MLK Day

Annually on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Day of Service, several hundred Macomb faculty, staff and students come together to volunteer throughout the community and on campus.
Observed each year on the third Monday in January, MLK Day is a federal holiday designated as a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer in honor of the life and legacy of Dr. King.
Macomb continues tradition of volunteering on MLK Day
Celebrating Dr. King’s legacy of service and humanitarian rights has become a college tradition that will continue this year through various volunteer opportunities on campus and throughout the community.
In the community, the college’s Student Life and Leadership team will lead service events at:
In addition, the college’s Student Life and Leadership department will organize several on-campus volunteer projects for registered participants, however registration is filled for most of the Macomb-sponsored volunteer service opportunities.
In addition to the volunteer opportunities, Macomb’s Inclusion, Diversity, Equity and Access (IDEA) and Student Life and Leadership departments have partnered with Oakland and Henry Ford community colleges to co-sponsor a virtual keynote address by Dr. Yusef Salaam, a member of the Exonerated Five and advocate for criminal justice reform.
The college will be closed on MLK Day.
Outside of MLK Day, the college’s Student Life and Leadership department regularly sponsors activities for students to better the community both on and off campus.

- The Capuchin Soup Kitchen - to prepare and serve breakfast;
- Windemere Park Senior Living - where volunteers will participate in activities with senior residents;
- Make Food Not Waste – to organize and package food;
- Habitat for Humanity Restore – to process donations; and
- Focus Hope – to provide help where needed.
